Dog Trainer Home Business

In a Nutshell

If you love dogs and would love to work with dogs, then a dog trainer career may be for you. While some dog training, specifically agility training, requires specialized facilities, you can build a small home based business providing obedience classes and basic dog training at the client's house.

The Longer Version

You do not have to have a large and fancy dog training center to start your own dog training service. In fact, many clients prefer a one-on-one lesson in the privacy of their home. Working in the home setting can be better for some dogs as well, allowing the trainer to provide dog behavior advice as well.

To be a dog trainer you must be an avid dog lover. You need to be a people's person as well, working alongside with the dog owner. As with any business, marketing and customer relations are also required. Of course, being a dog trainer also takes some… training! Find a good dog trainers school in your area that will provide you not only with a diploma, but a solid theoretical background and plenty of  hands-on experience.
Running a dog training service from home means you will be traveling to your client's residence, working with their dogs at their home. You need to have your own car, as you will be traveling with training accessories. Not all of the training will be done indoors and your service can include specialized "park sessions" as well.

Marketing your dog training services can be a challenge at first. Other than the regular channels of getting listed in your local Yellow Pages and advertising in local newspapers, you should also look into uniquely "canine" advertising channels. Places you should get to know, and have them know you, would be local veterinarian clinics, dog rescue organizations, dog breeders and dog show organizers. Network with key people, leave your card or even leaflets around. Get creative – why not volunteer to lecture at your local dog rescue facility? It will help the dogs and will get your name around.

What Do You Need?

You will have to invest at least several hundreds of dollars in proper training for yourself. A few accessories may be required, but your main investment will keep be into furthering your professional education.

So... How Much will I Make?

You may be able to charge anything between $20-$100 for a dog training session, depending the area where you live and the level of competition. You probably won't be able to handle more than 5-6 training sessions a day, as you need to put time into traveling between clients.
